What to Expect on a Sea Burial Service

Back to all postsMarch 28, 2026

A burial at sea ceremony is one of the most peaceful and meaningful ways to honor a loved one. If you've never been on a sea burial service before, it's natural to wonder what to expect. Here's a compassionate, step-by-step guide to help you prepare.

On the day of your ceremony, you'll meet Captain Brad at our departure point at 2455 Boat Ramp Drive, New Smyrna Beach, FL. Captain Brad will greet your family warmly, go over the ceremony details, and answer any last-minute questions before you board.

The boat ride from the dock through the Indian River Lagoon and out Ponce Inlet to the 3-nautical-mile mark takes approximately 10–15 minutes. It's a scenic, calming journey along one of Florida's most beautiful waterways. Many families find the ride itself to be a meaningful part of the experience.

Once offshore, Captain Brad will slow the vessel and conduct the ash scattering ceremony with care and reverence. You're welcome to say a few words, read a poem or prayer, play music via Bluetooth, or simply observe in quiet reflection. Biodegradable flowers and rose petals may be scattered alongside the ashes.

After the ceremony, Captain Brad will record the exact GPS coordinates — the latitude and longitude of where your loved one's ashes were scattered. These coordinates are yours to keep forever. An optional commemorative nautical certificate, personalized with your loved one's name, date, and coordinates, is also available.

The return journey is equally peaceful. Many families describe the ride back as a time of quiet reflection and gratitude. Captain Brad and his crew are there to support you every step of the way.
